ZrB2 components are typically hot-pressed by applying pressure to the heated material and then machining to shape. ZrB2 is unable to sinter due to the covalent properties of the material, and the surface oxides. Surface oxides cause the crystal grains to be coarser, before they become denser during the sintering. ZrB2 may be sintered without applying pressure. Sintering additives including boron-carbide and carbon will react to surface oxides in order to increase the driving force.

Zirconium diboride is a highly covalent ceramic material that has a hexagonal structure. ZrB2 is a ceramic ultra-high temperature (UHTC), with a melt point of 3246°C. The combination of its low density, 6.09g/cm3, and good high-temperature strength make ZrB2 a suitable candidate for high-temperature aerospace applications. It is a ceramic with unusually high thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. These properties are shared by isostructural hafnium dioxide and titanium diboride.

How are Zirconium Diboride Powder ZrB2 manufactured?
By metal thermal reduction, ZrO2 or HfO2 is reduced to respective diboron sullanes. Use inexpensive precursor materials, and react in accordance with the following reactions.

ZrO 2 + B 2 O 3 + 5Mg-ZrB 2 + 5MgO

The materials required for the stoichiometric reaction and boron thermal reaction (ZrO2 / TiO2 / HfO2 and B4C) are more expensive. Prepare ZrB2 for at least one hour at a temperature greater than 1600degC by the following reaction

2ZrO2 + 3C-2ZrB2 + B4C

This method is required to have a slight surplus of boron as some boron gets oxidized by the boron-carbide reduction process. ZrC was also produced by the reaction. However, when the reaction is performed with an excess of B4C of 20-25%, the ZrC disappears, and only ZrB2 will remain. UHTC produced at the lowest synthesis temperatures (1600degC), will be of finer dimensions with better sinterability. To promote oxide reduction and diffusion, boron carbide must be ground prior to boron-carbide reduction.

You can disperse ZrO2 on the polymer precursor to boron carbide before reaction. in. Heat the reaction mixture up to 1500degC to form boron carburide and carbon, followed by the reduction of ZrO2 into ZrB2.

If the substrate temperature is greater than 800degC the gas phase is used for the reduction of the zirconium-boron-tetrachloride vapors. Recent developments have allowed alternative ZrB2 layers to be produced by physical vapor deposit.

Applications for Zirconium Diboride ZrB2 Poudre
