Kenyan engineers recycle plastic to make bricks stronger than concrete

Nzambi Marty is an entrepreneur with an incredible goal -- to turn plastic used in landfills into a sustainable, sturdy building material. Her company, Gjenge Makers, uses plastic waste from commercial facilities to make bricks that can hold twice the weight of concrete thresholds.

Gjenge Makers is based in Nairobi, Kenya, where plastic waste pollution has become a serious problem. A study supported by the National Environmental Management Agency (NEMA) found that more than 50% of cattle near urban areas in Kenya had plastic in their stomachs. To tackle the problem, the Kenyan government outlawed the use of plastic bags in 2017 and banned all single-use plastics in nature reserves last year. However, these bans only address the problem of single-use plastics for consumers. Commercial waste remains a deep-rooted problem in the country.

Nzambi Matee told reporters she was "tired of sitting on the sidelines" and decided to create her own solution for commercial plastic waste. Because of her work in materials engineering, she was able to design a brick made from recycled plastic and sand that was compressed and heated to create a strong and sustainable alternative to concrete. Plastic fibrous structure not only makes it lighter, it is also less brittle than concrete.

"Our product is almost five to seven times stronger than concrete," Matee told Reuters. While she buys some plastic from a recycling company, she also receives free shipments of plastic waste from a local packaging plant. Currently, the Gjenge manufacturer factory can produce 1,500 bricks a day, According to Reuters.
